Tourist Attractions
Head over to the Putnam Park Overlook for a perfect view of the Y Bridge, which opened to traffic in 1814. Ripley’s Believe It or Not described it as “the only bridge in the world which you can cross and still be on the same side of the river.” The Y Bridge has been reconstructed multiple times, and it’s the only one of its kind still in use today. The National Road and Zane Grey Museum celebrates U.S. 40, the old National Road, and author Zane Grey, the city’s famous native son and a descendant of the city’s founder. Exhibits explain the history of the road, built in 1806, which provided the only significant land link between the East Coast and the Western frontier in the early 19th century. The museum features Grey’s manuscripts and memorabilia. He’s famous for old West novels.
